ASME B36.10M – Welded and Seamless Wrought Steel Pipe

ASME B36.10M covers the standardization of dimensions of welded and seamless wrought steel pipe. It shows both imperial and metric units, the metric units being soft conversions of the imperial units.

  1. Nominal size:
Maybe expressed in S.I. metric (mm) or imperial (inch) units
  2. Outside diameter:
is shown to the nearest 0.1mm for outside diameters which are 406.4mm O.D. and smaller and to the nearest 1.0mm for outside diameters larger than 406.4mm O.D.
  3. Mass (Weight):
The nominal plain end weight, in pounds per foot, is calculated using the following formula:
    : lb/ft = 10.69 x (OD – t) x t
The nominal plain end mass, in kilograms per meter, is calculated using the following formula
    : kg/m = 0.0246615 x (OD-t) x t
  4. Wall thickness designations:
    The wall
thickness designations “Standard WT”, “Extra Strong” and “Double Extra Strong”, have been commercially used designations for many years. Schedule numbers were added as a convenient designation for use in ordering pipe. Standard WT and Schedule 40 are identical for sizes up to NPS 10 inclusive. All larger sizes of Standard WT have 9.53mm wall thickness. Extra-Strong and Schedule 80 are identical for sizes up to NPS 8 inclusive. All larger sizes of Extra-Strong have 12.70mm wall thickness.
  5. Pipe ends:
Unless otherwise specified pipe ends are normally supplied as below:
    a) Up to and including 48.3mm O.D. sizes are supplied with plain ends cut square.
    b) Above 48.3mm O.D. sizes (except for Double Extra-Strong pipe) are supplied with plain ends beveled.
    c) All Double Extra-Strong pipes are supplied with plain ends cut square.
  6. End Preparation
    (a) Beveled ends for API steel linepipe are normally to API specification i.e. Angle 30°(+5°-0°)
    (b) Beveled ends for steel pipe to ASTM specifications are normally to ASME B16.25 i.e. Angle 37.5°(+2.5°-2.5°)

API 5L SPECIFICATION
API 5L is a specification developed by the American Petroleum Institued (API) for the manufacture of steel line pipes. These pipes are primarly used for conveying oil, gas, and water in the petroleum and natural gas industries. API 5L specification covers seamless and welded steel line pipes, including various grades of steel and different levels of strength (such as Grade A, B, X42, X52, X65, etc.). It specifies requirements for chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensions, and testing methods to ensure the quality and reliability of the pipes for their intended applications in transportation of fluids in the oil and gas sector.

TP304/304L, TP316/316L
The Austenitic Grades of Stainless Steel Pipe furnished in accordance with ASTM A312 have been found suitable for low-temperature service down to -198 deg. C where Charpy V-Notch absorbed values of 20 Joule min. are required without qualificaiton by impact tests.

Stainless Steel Grade TP304L and TP316L are low-carbon variations of Standard Grades TP304 and TP316. They can be welded and heat-treated with reduced tendency to inter-crystalline disintegration or damage to corrosion-resistance properties.

GRADE TP304/304L
are both widely used grades of chemical and heat-resistant stainless steel. While TP304L shares similarities with TP304, it offers improved resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding. Both may require post-weld heat treatment and find applications in petroleum refining, chemical processing, food processing, and industrial equipment.

GRADE TP309
Grade TP309 boasts higher chromium and nickel content, resulting in greater corrosion and heat resistance compared to TP304 and TP304L. It is suitable for applications requiring high resistance to scaling at temperatures up to 1040 deg. C. TP309 finds use in heating furnaces, gas processing, and petrochemical equipment where excellent oxidation and heat resistance at high temperatures are imperative.

GRADE TP310
Similar to TP309, Grade TP310 offers exceptional heat resistance but can withstand higher temperatures up to 1093 deg. C. It is employed in the same applications as TP309, providing superior performance in high-temperature environments.

GRADE TP316/316L
are stainless steel grades known for their superior corrosion and heat resistance. While TP316 contains higher carbon content, TP316L has lower carbon content, making it less susceptible to intergranular corrosion after welding. Both grades are commonly used in piping systems, heat exchangers, and various industrial applications where resistance to corrosion ahdn high temperature is essential.

GRADE TP321
contains titanium for improved intergranular corrosion resistance, suitable for applications where post-weld annealing is challenging. Primarily used in high-temperature services up to 900 deg. C, such as heating furnaces and heat exchangers.

GRADE TP347
contains columbium and tantalum stabilizers, making it suitable for applications where post-weld annealing is not possible or at temperatures between 425-900 deg. C. Used in equipment involving considerable welding.

GRADE TP348
similar to TP347 but with specific tantalum and cobalt content for radioactive services.

H GRADES (TP304H, TP316H, TP321H, TP347H)
Primarily designed for elevated temperature applications where strength is crucial. Require controlled carbon content and solution annealing at specified temperatures. Available on special order.
